Maintenance & Operations Related Research and New Technology

1. COMPLETED NCHRP PROJECTS
These projects are maintenance related research projects that have been completed by NCHRP in the last ten years. These projects were from TRB’s Area 14 - Maintenance of Way and Structures and Area 6 - Snow and Ice Control. Clicking on the links will take you to the TRB website page that describes the projects in detail.
2. ACTIVE NCHRP PROJECTS
These are NCHRP maintenance related research projects that are currently active. These projects are from Area 6 - Snow and Ice Control, Area 9 – Bituminous Materials, Area 13 – Equipment, and Area 14 - Maintenance of Way and Structures. Clicking on the links will take you to the TRB web site page that describes the projects in detail.
3. PENDING NCHRP PROJECTS
These are maintenance related NCHRP research problem statements that are in some stage of being developed into a contracted project. Panels are being formed, problem statements are being refined by the panels to send out as RFP’s, contractors are being selected and contracts are being initiated. The problem statements are taken from Area 6 – Snow and Ice Control, Area 10 - Specifications, Procedures, and Practices, and Area 14 – Maintenance of Way and Structures. Clicking on the links will take you to the TRB web page that describes the projects in detail.
4. FY 2006 NCHRP PROBLEM STATEMENTS & FUNDED PROJECTS
These are the maintenance related problem statements that were rated by AASHTO for funding in FY 2006. The initial ratings were done by the Research Advisory Committee, RAC, made up of the research directors from the 50 states. Final prioritization was done by SCOR, Standing Committee on Research, made up of a select number of CEO’s and Research Director’s.
5. NCHRP Project 20-7 Research for AASHTO Standing Committee on Highways
NCHRP 20-7 is a long standing research project administered by the Standing Committee on Highways. Projects are selected and funded by a vote of the members of this committee. Many of the projects deal with maintenance issues. Currently active projects are listed followed by those completed within the last 10 years. The web site that contains all of the projects funded back to December 2, 1968 is found at this link.
6. NCHRP Project 20-5 Synthesis of Current Highway Practices
NCHRP 20-5 is a long-standing project that provides Syntheses of Current Highway Practices. The synthesis series reports on current knowledge and practice, in a compact format, without the detailed directions usually found in handbooks or design manuals. Each report in the series provides a compendium of the best knowledge available on those measures found to be the most successful in resolving specific problems. These reports are an effective means of assembling and disseminating information on current practice. Each report is prepared by a consultant who has expertise in the topic area, with assistance provided by a technical panel. Practitioners and researchers make extensive use of these reports.
7. FHWA WINTER MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT PROJECTS

FHWA has been collecting information on snow and ice control techniques from other states and countries.
The web site for this clearinghouse is:
http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/winter/index.html

8. FHWA Pooled Fund Projects
When significant or widespread interest is shown in solving transportation-related problems, research, planning, and technology transfer activities may be jointly funded by several federal, state, regional, and local transportation agencies, academic institutions, foundations or private firms as a pooled fund study.
To qualify as a pooled fund study, more than one state transportation agency, federal agency, other agency (such as a municipality or metropolitan planning organization, college/university or private company must find the subject important enough to commit funds or other resources to conduct the research, planning and technology transfer activity. If a subject has been studied previously, the new study should provide new information that will complement or advance previous investigations of the subject matter.
9. WSDOT & T2 CENTER MOUSETRAPS
The purpose of the WSDOT “Build A Better Mousetrap” program is to first, recognize the initiative and innovative thinking of public agency transportation staff in the development of tools, equipment modifications, and processes that increase safety, reduce costs. Secondly, the program helps identify and distribute ideas created in the field so others can duplicate and implement them. This will help to achieve the final goal of continued improvement in all areas.
10. UC Davis' Advanced Highway Maintenance and Construction Technology (AHMCT)
AHMCT is a project-oriented research center on the campus of UC Davis. They develop concept vehicles and equipment for the California Department of Transportation.
11. NCHRP PROBLEM STATEMENTS NOT SELECTED
These are NCHRP Problem Statements that were not selected but represent an excellent summary of research needs. The problem statements are listed by year (since 2002) and may still have relevance for many agencies. Because the funding available to NCHRP permits programming only a small portion of the many worthy problems, the hope is that some of the problems might be undertaken by other agencies. A full listing of all NCHRP Problem Statements not selected since 2002 can be found at: http://www4.trb.org/trb/nchrp/unselected.nsf
12. Maintenance-Related Research
The Transportation Research Board's Research in Progress (RiP) website contains the Research In Progress (RiP) Database (http://rip.trb.org/) which includes State Departments of Transportation current research projects. This database contains current or recently completed transportation research projects. Most of the records are projects funded by Federal and State Departments of Transportation. University transportation research is also included.
13. NCHRP Problem Statements Submitted for FY 2007
These are the maintenance related problem statements that are being submitted to AASHTO by the Subcommittee on Maintenance for funding in FY 2007. The problem statements will be submitted as a NCHRP Problem Statement, NCHRP 20-5 Synthesis Project, or NCHRP 20-7 Research. These problem statements, along with submittals by State DOTs and other subcommittees, will be voted on in late 2005/early 2006 to determine which ones will be funded in FY 2007.
