This position is located in the Office of Bridges and Structures in the Consultant Coordination Section of the Design Unit. Duties include review of complex to highly complex non-standard bridge final design plans prepared by consultants. Highly complex bridges include border river bridges or rehabilitation to samea, signature bridges, unconventional type bridges, or curved steel bridges. Plan reviews are done to ensure compliance with Iowa DOT and AASHTO specifications, completeness, constructability, maintenance, safety, adherence to plan preparation checklist, and consistency with project specific design criteria. Use advanced knowledge of current design concepts, principles, applicable research, and construction practices involving structural analysis to review bridges and components. Provide day-to-day liaison with consultants requesting guidance or technical support on office policy and procedure. Ensure plan development issues raised by FHWA are addressed and resolved. Research and formulate alternative solutions to design problems by reviewing written policy, past precedents, and discussing with knowledgeable colleagues. Resolve issues that arise during construction, as appropriate. Serve as point of contact for structural "requests for information" during construction phase. Provide input to consultant evaluations. Candidate should have excellent communication skills, be a self-starter, and work well in a team environment. Shift: Days, with hours being Monday thru Friday flextime available.
Minimum Qualifications: Licensed as a professional engineer by the Iowa State Board of Engineering Examiners and the equivalent of two years of full time professional level transportation or related civil engineering experience.
Salary range: $58,323 – 89,710 plus benefits. Application Deadline: February 11, 2010
